The sex industry is controversial issue that has been debated on whether or not to allow the industry to become legal. So what would be the solution to best handle such a problematic profession? On the one hand, many have acknowledged the problems it holds while operating illegally, and believed it would be far more beneficial for prostitutes to allow the sex industry to operate as a legitimate business. On the other hand, however, many who are in opposition to the proposal refuse it from becoming a legitimate business. Those who support this viewpoint believe that it destroys and means women by practicing a profession that many consider to be slavery; yet they lack a solution to end or stunt the growth of current issues that have†¦show more content†¦It is often said that risks are always involved in the decisions any individual decides to make, but for some, especially women put themselves in far greater risk of running into problems by working as a sex worker. As Cheryl Edwardes states, â€Å"Condoms are not used 100 per cent of the time in the sex industry because there is a much lower percentage of use by street workers. Street workers have a greater dependence on drugs.... Unsafe practices continue. ...[U]p to 50 per cent of brothel workers are undertaking oral sex without using prophylactics.. Basically, she is saying that this is a profession that puts its labor force in harm s way by potentially exposing them to diseases every time they provide their services to a client. Apparently, Edwardes does not say so directly, she apparently assumes that if the client wishes to perform sexual activity without a condom, they must do as requested regardless if the industry is legal in the area or not. Thus, providing a decent reason to be in opposition of legalizing prostitution.
